There are lots of other options for paint and top coat. Check out this helpful blog on How to Paint Custom Air Force 1s With Angelus Acrylic Leather Paints & Finishers. Just be sure to keep in mind the finish look you want (flat/semi/gloss etc.) It also helps a bit with scuffs and protection. It will crack in places where the shoe will flex a lot. Make sure it dries completely between passes. 
Angelus doesnt like heavy layers to bond together. It also seems to maintain the flexibility of the paint on the surface better than just adding water. If you want to airbrush Angelus paint, you have to use 2-Thin because the paint is too thick out of the bottle.
2thin works great and helps with proper adhesion over just water. With a 1:1 thinner to paint ratio I was able to get good opacity with a few coats, I may try using less thinner and see if I get decent flow on other parts of the jacket. ALWAYS strain your paint after mixing with 2thin. I used the Angelus Paint 2-Thin with the white paint from Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint Starter Kit in a MLW Acrylic 2mm Tip, Empty Paint Marker (111.000) with fantastic results.
